Vacation Without Starting Over
Because your fitness plan should survive an airport.

Because your fitness plan should survive an airport.
A vacation is not a fitness emergency.
You do not need to earn your trip before leaving.
You do not need to punish yourself when you return.
And you definitely do not need to spend an expensive vacation searching for a kitchen scale.
The goal during travel is usually maintenance, not optimization.
Before you leave
Decide which version of success you are using.
A normal training week?
A reduced week?
Walking only?
Two short workouts?
Complete rest?
All can be reasonable depending on the trip.
If this is a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, your priority may simply be enjoying the vacation while staying moderately active.
Airports and travel days
Travel days are already tiring.
Do not automatically schedule your hardest workout at 5:00 a.m. before an international flight.
Instead, walk when practical.
Stretch if sitting for long periods bothers you.
Drink fluids regularly.
Eat a normal meal when possible instead of arriving extremely hungry and then eating everything within a five-gate radius.
The 10-minute hotel workout
Complete 1–3 comfortable rounds:
Chair or bodyweight squat — 8–15.
Incline push-up against a stable surface — 6–15.
Supported reverse lunge or sit-to-stand — 6–10 each side.
Backpack or band row — 8–15.
Glute bridge or standing hip extension — 10–15.
Plank, elevated plank, or another suitable core exercise — 15–30 seconds.
That is not your complete training program.
It is a maintenance tool.
The 20-minute version
Repeat the same movements for additional rounds or add walking, light cardio, or a hotel-gym exercise.
You do not need a heroic workout.
The win is keeping the habit alive.
Restaurants
Use a simple process.
Start with a protein source you enjoy.
Add vegetables or fruit when practical.
Choose a carbohydrate you actually want.
Use sauces and fats with awareness rather than fear.
Eat until comfortably satisfied.
Dessert is allowed.
You are on vacation, not appearing before a nutrition tribunal.
Buffets
Walk through first.
See what is available.
Then build a plate.
This small pause prevents the classic buffet phenomenon in which the first four things you see become half your dinner before you discover the food you actually wanted.
Alcohol
Alcohol contains energy, can affect sleep and judgment, and may change food decisions.
If you drink, decide what amount feels reasonable before the third drink begins negotiating on behalf of the first two.
Alternating alcoholic drinks with water can also slow the pace.
People who should not drink for medical, legal, religious, recovery, medication-related, pregnancy, or personal reasons should not treat fitness advice as permission to do so.
The morning after a big meal
Do not skip breakfast as punishment unless you genuinely are not hungry.
Do not add two hours of cardio.
Do not call yesterday a failure.
Return to normal.
The fastest path back to your routine is your routine.
Returning home
Your first workout back should often be easier than the last workout before the trip.
Use slightly less weight or volume.
See how you feel.
Resume normal progression over the next several sessions.
You did not lose your identity because you left town for six days.
